Enjoy Your Ride With Bicycle Baby Carriers

Bicycle baby carriers let you continue to ride you bicycle because now you can take the baby along with you.

One thing that you have to keep in mind is that these baby bike carriers are designed for babies that are at least a year old. There are many different designs on baby bike carriers and each one has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Whichever type you decide to purchase, both you and the baby should wear a helmet.

Types of bicycle carriers for babies

Some of the designs you can choose in baby carriers for a bicycle are:

  • Trailers. These ride close to the ground, so the baby will not sustain any injuries if he/she should happen to fall out. Those that have wall-mounted hitches are not as wobbly as other designs and provide a more comfortable ride. You should also have a pillow for the baby to rest his/her head on when sleepiness occurs.
  • Child carriers. These are carriers that are mounted on the back or front of the bicycle seat you are seated on. The front mounted models let you see the baby at all times when you are riding along. Although the balance better than rear-mounted models, most parents prefer to have the rear seats because their view is not obstructed.
  • Sidecars. This design is very popular in the UK, but has not been used very much in North America. If you opt for this design, you will need a large space when you ride your bicycle because of the larger width.

Safety tips for using a bicycle carrier for your baby

One thing you should never do is switch the baby carrier to a borrowed bicycle.

Each carrier is designed for a particular bike and when you use a bike with the carrier on a regular basis, you know exactly how it reacts in certain circumstances. Using your carrier on someone else’s bike could mean the carrier will not react in the same way. If you don’t have any choice, you should ride the bike with the carrier attached for about 10 miles first to see how it handles.

Take it slow

You also have to take it slow at all times when you are riding your bicycle, because speed can reduce your reaction time if something unexpected happens, such as a dog running across your path. You should also pay attention to the terrain because rough terrain could lead to overturning the trailer. The extra weight an attached carrier will also make it easier to overturn on rocky and hilly ground.
