Booster Car Seats - For the Older Child

Booster car seats are designed for toddlers over the age of 2 or ones that are heavier than the recommended weight of the car seat.

There are many styles with a variety of options to choose from. Features can include padding, toy tray, and some can adjust for height.

Most car seats convert from toddler seats to booster seats so you don’t have to make an additional purchase.

There are certain rules regarding the use of toddler booster car seats, which include:

• The child must face the front of the car in a booster seat.
• The seat must have a tether strap
• Use the tether strap exactly as the manufacturer recommends
• When you are installing the booster seat, use you own weight to tighten the seat belt.
• Make sure the shoulder straps are at or above the toddler’s shoulder.

Booster Seats - Not Just For Toddlers

Children up to the age of 8 years old should be seated in a booster seat when they are riding in a vehicle. Since seat belts in a vehicle are installed to fit adults, a booster seat raises the child up so that these seat belts fit older children more comfortably. The top of the booster seat or the top of the vehicle’s seat should support the child’s head. Both lay and shoulder belts need to be used with a booster seat.

Types of Booster Seats

Depending on the size of your child, there are two types of booster seats you can have:

• High Back for use when the regular vehicle seat is lower than the height of the child’s ears
• Backless for use when the top of the seat in the vehicle is higher than the child’s head.

The choice is different for each parent because of the different weights and sizes of children of the same age.
