Consumer Guide to Backpacks Backpack Comfort

Backpack Comfort

A backpack will only serve you well if it is comfortable.

Thus after all is said and done you want to make certain you invest in a pack that will provide you with ample comfort. It must be comfortable for you and it must be comfortable for your baby.

There are many features that make a pack comfortable. These include padded straps, a padded back pad, a padded chest pad and a waist belt to help distribute the weight of your child.

A lot of comfort has to do with setting your pack up correctly. Be sure when you get your pack to read the manufacturers directions. Shoulder straps must be adjusted evenly to help distribute your child's weight correctly. Generally the more padding, the more comfortable the pack. A padded safety harness will help improve your child's comfort and eliminate potential chaffing or discomfort from the straps rubbing against your child's skin. This is particularly important if you plan to carry your child around in a tank top or other clothes that will not cover the shoulders. Remember the straps will come in direct contact with your child's sensitive skin.

If you plan on wearing your baby in a sling keep in mind most slings have little padding. Many also support your baby on just one shoulder. While this is convenient while your baby is still very young, it may not be convenient once your little tyke is a bit older. You might consider investing in an inexpensive sling until your baby is 6 months, then opting for a backpack once your baby is old enough to ride in one.

I highly recommend a sunshade with your backpack. Alternatively, be sure you little one is well protected from the elements with a wide brim hat. This will make riding up high much more comfortable for everyone! You should also consider a pack with a least one front pocket where you can easily reach sunscreen, insect repellent and water. This will improve the convenience you associate with backpacking, and thus make each of your journeys infinitely more comfortable.

Remember, wearing a back pack or any infant sling for that matter requires a little patience and practice. While it may seem challenging initially, once you get the hang of it you'll wonder what you ever did without one!
