Consumer Guide to Backpacks Types of Baby Backpacks

Types of Baby Packs

There are several different kinds of baby backpacks and carriers.

It is important you select the right one based on your baby's age, size and comfort.

You may also have style preferences you take into consideration when buying a pack or sling. You should understand that baby back packs are different from infant carriers and slings, which usually allow you to carry your baby in front rather than on your back. There are definite advantages to both.

Here are some types of carriers and backpacks you should familiarize yourself with before shopping.

Carriers and Infant Slings

Infant carriers and slings are similar to baby back packs, except generally you carry your baby in the front instead of on your back. These carriers are recommended for babies under 6 months of age because they provide more control and head support for your infant. Slings are generally made from a single piece of material that slips over your shoulder. They provide a terrific and convenient place for your baby to nurse discreetly. Even better, most slings allow you to carry your baby close to your chest and heart. This often comforts a newborn and gently eases them to sleep.

While slings are well suited for newborns and infants, many parents use them during the entire first year and even throughout the toddler years. Some slings are also easily converted to accommodate wearing your baby on your back instead of in front. You can sometimes even modify them to carry your baby on your hip. The only downside is with most slings; the bulk of the weight you carry rests on one shoulder. This may be problematic if you have back or shoulder problems. Most infant carriers or baby backpacks evenly distribute your baby's weight between both shoulders. This may influence your choice when buying.

Infant carriers are different from slings. They allow you to hold your baby toward your chest while a newborn, and then away from your chest once your baby is able to control and support his or her head and neck. Most babies enjoy riding front ways so they can see what is going on around them. Some parents prefer infant carriers to slings because they distribute the weight of your baby more evenly between your shoulders. There are even some infant carriers that convert to a backpack after your child is old enough to ride on back.

Baby Backpacks

Back packs are a better choice for older babies and toddlers. As the name suggests, backpacks allow you to haul around your little one on your back. Many toddlers and babies love traveling this way, as it gives them a bird's eye view of the world around the. Why sit in a covered stroller when you can sit up high and see everything after all?

Backpacks are a convenient way to carry your baby around while camping, cleaning, strolling and more. The only downside of a backpack? It takes a little more time getting your baby into and out of, especially if you don't have much practice. Fortunately as with any carrier, with a little time you can carry your child in a backpack relatively easily. Some back packs come with handy kickstands that support the pack while you load your little one. This can make transporting your child to and from much easier.

You should keep in mind when shopping that a baby backpack isn't for everyone. Newborns are not candidates for a backpack. Most babies are not ready for a back pack until they are at least 6 months old. Why? Your baby needs to have good head and neck control if you plan to carry him on your back. The good news? You can typically use a backpack until your toddler is about 40 pounds. Keep in mind however this is a lot of weight to carry around. Many petite moms find 40 pounds is a bit much to haul around. Consider it great exercise however, if you are highly motivated!

There are several different models of baby backpacks. While many carry similar features, most have one or two accessories that allow them to stand apart from the crowd. Let's review a few so you can select the one that is best for you.
