Consumer Guide to Car Seats What is Latch?

What Is The LATCH and Why Is It Important?

If you are considering buying a carseat for your baby undoubtedly you have heard the term LATCH. This is short for "lower anchors and tethers for children."

The LATCH system was recently developed in newer automobiles. The LATCH system helps install and anchor car seats more safely and easily into your car. The system uses tethers and anchors to support and lock your child's car seat into place without having to worry about the seat moving too much in one direction or another.

Before the LATCH system you had to secure the car seat to your set using a seatbelt. You can still do this on all cars made earlier than 2003, however most models built after this are automatically equipped with the LATCH system.

Don't worry if you don't have a LATCH system in your car. You can still use even the most up-to-date car seats. If you do want to ensure you get a LATCH compatible seat, all Graco seats and infant carriers feature this new system, though you can still also use their seats in older model cars.
