Double Strollers More Convenient for Mom
Mothers with more than one child under school age will appreciate the convenience of double strollers.
They are available in either a tandem style, which seats children one behind the other, or in a side by side style which seats children next to each other.
Options for Older Children Too
Sit and stand strollers resemble a single stroller, but have a "running board" along the back to accommodate a standing second child.
For optimum use the child seated in the front of the stroller must be able to sit upright and the one riding on the back must be able to stand upright.
These strollers are terrific for the times when you are in a hurry - you can have the older child hop on to get places faster than they can walk. This type stroller is also great for keeping both children safe and restrained in crowded areas such as stores, shopping centers, amusement parks, etc.
Fitness Considerations
For moms who want to get in shape, manufacturers are now making strollers for jogging as well as "sport strollers." These models have three wheels, look sporty and most are appropriate for vigorous jogging.
Important Features to Look for When Buying Strollers
- Safety Considerations. When choosing the stroller check to see that it will not tip backwards when light pressure is placed on the handlebars. Also check for stability which should increase with a wide wheel base. If the seat is mounted low and deep within the stroller frame it will also increase the overall stability.
- A good safety harness. Choose a three or five point harness for the highest safety rating. A three point belt goes around the waist and between the legs and is considered the minimum for safety; better still is a five-point belt which also goes over the shoulders as well as around the waist and between the legs.
- Good side and rear protection for a seat that reclines. Infants who can not yet support the weight of their heads require strollers with reclining seats. Older children can use a reclining seat to nap comfortably in the stroller.
- The right handlebar. A comfortable stroller handgrip and handlebar at the right height are important because double, side by side, or tandem strollers are more difficult to push than single strollers. Check out the handlebar height as well, parents who are taller than average will want higher handlebars.
- A comfortable and sturdy stroller frame. A frame that is both upholstered and padded offers the best support for the child.
- Hard nylon wheels. This type wheel is better than plastic. Look for larger wheels, they will deliver a smoother ride.
